Meet Susan Groves, Owner/Curator

Susan is a graduate of Goucher College in Baltimore, MD, with a degree in Communications. A life long lover of art, Susan grew up in Lexington. In fact, her first purchase of original art as a young adult was from a local artist here in Rockbridge County and remains the favorite of her large and ever growing collection. Susan ended up moving all over the United States in her job as a radio DJ and Programmer. She collected art from all her travels, and after 25 years away, decided Lexington was where she wanted to be. She moved back and began her journey at the Cabell Gallery in 2015.

After 4 years as curator, Susan had opportunity to take over the gallery completely. With the purchase of the gallery, her love for Lexington and her love for art finally combined to a true calling. Her joy is in finding emerging artists and sharing this region’s incredible artistic talent with all the patrons of the Cabell Gallery.

Susan resides in Lexington, Virginia with her husband, her two cats, her dog and her father.

We're proud to allign ourselves with organizations that make a difference in our community!

Meet Johanna Taylor, Gallery Manager

Johanna is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina with a degree in Art and Visual Culture concentrating in Art Management and Nonprofit Organization. She is an artist first but an arts advocate second, always seeking opportunities to steward meaningful relationships between art and the community. She’s happy to just sit around and talk about art all day.

Trained in traditional painting and two-dimensional design, she has now begun exploring fiber arts and textile crafts spanning from crochet to cut pile carpet weaving. She’s interested in the connections between art and utility and incorporates new texture and dimension to otherwise 2D compositions.

Johanna moved to Lexington in 2023 to be of better help to her parents and to focus on her mental health. She lives in a tiny apartment in Rockbridge County with her two cats Jack and Cuppy and learns something new everyday.
